My GEMS Story: Aaron Bissette
Aaron Bissette
Hospice Chaplain, 3HC Goldsboro Office
“Tuesday morning, I stopped by to check in on my husband’s grandparents, Papa and Granny, on the way to work from my doctor’s appointment. When I arrived, Aaron was there doing his work up and questions getting to know our family. His demeanor was so sweet and so patient. The calmness in the room hit you as soon as you walked through the door. After Aaron was done with his assessment, he read scripture from the Bible and started playing some of Papa’s favorite hymns on the guitar. Since Papa transitioned to hospice care and took his turn for the worse, there had not been much communication. He would open his eyes and say ‘Hey’ and ‘Love you too’ but not much other than that. During the scripture reading, Papa’s younger daughter grabbed his hand to let him know that we were there. Once Aaron started playing his guitar, Papa let go of his daughter’s hand and reached up to grab Aaron’s. It was so sweet and so special. It gave all of us chills. Later that afternoon, we realized that he really didn’t have that much longer. Papa took his last breath the next evening around 8:50pm. Our hearts are broken, and we have lost the rock of our family, but we know that he is rejoicing in Heaven. Moments like he had with Aaron remind us and give us peace that Papa was ready to go home. He was ready to be with my mother-in-law again and walk the streets of gold with Jesus. I was Papa’s granddaughter by marriage, but for the past 15 years he has shown me so much love and welcomed me as his granddaughter. I am so thankful for Aaron and Papa’s team of nurses that have not only cared for him but for us as well. They answered all our questions and each of them were so patient, just like Aaron. I am so thankful and blessed to have been able to experience it from the family side of things instead of as an employee. Being employed with 3HC brings me so much joy, but being able to actually see the phenomenal care we bring to our patients brings my heart even more joy. On behalf of the Fail family, THANK YOU!!” -Taylor M., Fellow Employee at 3HC and Family Member
