Can a Hospice Patient Change Their Mind? Situations That May Arise
Desire for Curative Treatment
Sometimes, new treatments may arise and the hospice patient may decide to seek medical care. Or perhaps the patient just changes their mind and decides to pursue active curative measures. If that occurs, the patient will be able to leave hospice.
Improvement in Condition
In certain cases, the patient’s condition may improve to the point that their prognosis indicates that they can live beyond the six months required for hospice care. The patient will be able to leave hospice care if they choose to do so.
They can return to hospice care, but will need a physician to recertify them.
Personal Preferences
Sometimes, the hospice patient just may change their mind due to new preferences or life circumstances.
Can A Hospice Patient Change Their Mind? What Happens When They Do
Once a hospice patient decides to revoke their hospice care, our team will assist in transitioning them to the type of care they prefer, whether that is with standard medical care or a different treatment plan. We work with the entire healthcare team to help ensure a transfer that is as seamless as possible.
If, for some reason, the patient wants to return to hospice, they can do so if they meet the eligibility criteria again and are recertified by a doctor.
